Description
The story centers on a woman trapped in the monotony of everyday life. Her world is blurry and repetitive, until a pair of contact lenses sharpens the outlines of her existence, transforming her perception of reality. The apartment she inhabits becomes both a prison and a mirror, a space where daily rituals turn into meditations on identity, vision, and the act of seeing itself. Stylistically, the film is sparse and formalist, with long static shots and a sense of claustrophobic intimacy. Critics have described it as both unsettling and unexpectedly humorous, drawing comparisons to Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman in its exploration of feminine isolation and domestic space. Premiering at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in November 2024, the film earned Ruiqi Lu the Best Director Award for its aesthetic clarity and meta-cinematic exploration. It later screened at festivals worldwide, receiving praise as one of the most distinctive entries in the Rebels With a Cause program and winning Best Low-Budget Feature at Fantaspoa. In essence, He Ma Pi Fu is not a straightforward narrative but an immersive meditation on vision, repetition, and the fragile boundary between life and cinema.
