Description
The Unaired pilot is titled, 'The Vintage Years'. Although it is similar in many ways to what becomes 'Falcon Crest', there are significant differences. First, the winery and property are never called 'Falcon Crest' and that name is not spoken or seen in the pilot. There are several character differences. Chase Gioberti is played by Clu Gulager and Maggie is played by Samantha Eggar. The characters are not as defined as in the series.....more black and white here. Example.....Angela Channing is EVIL.....Chase Gioberti is GOOD......not a lot of complexity. Other character differences include Richard Channing (Michael Swan) as an established son of Angela and a mercenary type. Additionally, Julia Cumson is named Dorcas and the character of Emma Channing is reduced to screams heard from the attic and a brief glimpse on a staircase! The plot follows Chase and his family trying to establish themselves in the valley following the death of his father Jason. Angela wants the land and winery for herself and does not want to share. Richard and Lance follow Angela's orders to trip up Chase and his family wherever and however possible. Angela's approach is to use Cole Gioberti as a spur to make Lance a worthy heir and leader. Chase and Maggie are against Cole snuggling up to Angela and all her gifts and incentives. When Lance hires Chase's picking crew away, Cole realizes that Angela is a threat and he retreats back to his family where he belongs. Chase confronts Angela and corners her into restoring his crew.....just in time to pick the grapes from his ready fields. Lance and Richard are seen looking on.....planning the next move. An interesting pilot....filmed in and at the actual mansion where they filmed the 'Falcon Crest' series for 7 years. This is a 'rough' draft of a much more complex and intriguing series to come!!
